Even though his main rival in the youth classification was part of the trio fighting it out for the stage win, Tejay van Garderen finished with the same time as Edvald Boasson Hagen and will spend another day in the white jersey.
“To be honest, I got tangled up in the mess before the final climb so I was just trying to move up to help Cadel. I saw him up there on the front and I thought, ‘Oh man, I should be up there doing that for him.' But I was sitting a bit too far back.
“Being in a prize jersey at the Tour is pretty cool. I'm definitely enjoying it.
“It felt cool to be riding around in a jersey it was a fun experience. Hagen gave me a little scare towards the end when he jumped away but I'm glad to be back in the white jersey tomorrow.â€
