The 4km uphill time trial from Les Gets to Mont Chéry gave Alberto Contador the opportunity to win the inaugural stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné for the first time in his career on a steep course that suited the climbers. Richie Porte, second, and Chris Froome, third, joined the Spaniard on the podium.
“It was a very hard time trial, especially from km 2 to 1km to go. I've tried to speed up but it was hard to change rhythm. The climb suited me really well. I knew I could time trial well on this course but I didn't know if I was able to win it. I started flat out and I had good legs. I didn't expect to win but I can't say it's a surprise to beat Chris Froome. It's just been a perfect day and I'll take the race day by day from now on. Les Gets is a summer and winter resort between Lake Geneva and Mont-Blanc with top-quality tourist facilities and services. It's part of the fantastic French-Swiss Portes du Soleil ski area. An 18-hole golf course, skiing and mountain biking are its leading attractions thanks in particular to the many waymarked ski runs and tracks which are suitable for all levels, in amongst the fir trees and alpine pastures. One of the most beautiful views in the region is from the top of Mont Chéry. The 360° panoramic view of the Mont-Blanc and Dents du Midi range is a real treat for those who love admiring the scenery. This is where the prologue of the 68th edition of the Critérium will finish. Les Gets is also a very attractive village with typical Savoy architecture where traditions and lifestyle are rooted in the local heritage. The famous Museum of Mechanical Music and its wonderful collection of instruments is a good example of this. The International Festival of Mechanical Music, which takes place this year from the 15th to 17th July, is well-known throughout Europe. Les Gets hosts many sports events and over the past 15 years has established itself as a venue for national and international competitions. With the French snowboard championships in the winter and the world mountain bike championships in the summer, the resort now has renowned ambassadors who spread the image of Les Gets throughout the world: Julien Absalon, several times Olympic medal winner and cross country mountain biking world champion, Loïc Bruni, downhill mountain biking world champion as well as the skier Adeline Baud-Mugnier. Cycling fans of all kinds certainly aren't disappointed and throughout the summer take the mountain bike, road or even GetsLib' (electric bikes) routes in the village and surrounding areas. The setting of the official start of the 2016 Critérium du Dauphiné, Les Gets will be the first mountain pass taken by the riders on the Route des Grandes Alpes.
