Nordkapp (North Cape) is a municipality living of fishing and tourism. Fishing was the reason people settled here, and the coastal culture is deeply rooted in the population. Nordkapp municipality has some 3,100 inhabitants.
Honningsvåg is the main centre, with some 2,500 inhabitants. The five other municipalities are Repvåg (mainland), Nordvågen, Kamøyvær, Gjesvær and the world's northernmost fishing village of Skarsvåg. All manmade structures except the Honningsvåg church were burnt down in 1944, so all the settlements are characterised by the colourful reconstruction architecture of the 50ies. A good selection of shops, restaurants and services are at hand.
Nordkapp is characterised by its climate, with relative mild winters with an average temperature of -3,4C, and temperate summer temperatures around +10C. From the 20th of November to the 22nd of January, the sun is below the horizon at mid-day, whereas the Midnight Sun is visible on the North Cape from the 10th of May to the 30th of July.
Nordkapp municipality can be reach by plane to Honningsvåg, by bus and by the Hurtigruten. In addition to visiting the North Cape, visitors go on bird safaris, deep sea fishing, hiking and watch the summer theatre. Nordkapp offers a wide range of accommodation possibilities.
You will enjoy genuine coastal culture and hospitality here. You can join the fishermen out on the fjord and eat your catch for dinner. Or you can get to know Sami culture and visit the reindeer herds by the coast, or out on the endless Finnmarksvidda mountain plain. Take a trip in a riverboat on one of our rivers, or a fishing trip to one of our many thousand lakes – a fantastic experience! Ride a snowmobile, reindeer or dog sledge across the snow-covered mountain plain, or how about a visit to the North Cape, a thrilling experience whether seen beneath the Midnight Sun of summer, or the winter Northern Lights!
Finnmark - Norwegian Lapland appeals to your senses, conveying one spectacular event after another. The most wonderful of images seen here cannot be captured on film.
The greatest impressions encountered here cannot be conveyed with words. The peace and quiet you will find in the natural environment simply has to be experienced, and the best moments will remain your own!
The Northern Lights City of Alta
Alta is the biggest city in the province of Finnmark, with some 20,000 inhabitants. It's a modern city with hotels, restaurants, shops, cultural events and outdoor experiences. The Northern Lights city of Alta, enjoying a stable climate, is among the best places to observe the magics of the Northern Lights. In 1899, the scientist Birkeland built the first Northern Lights Observatory on Mount Haldde. The Northern Lights Cathedral from 2013 is a modern cathedral in a modern city with lines as elegant as the Northern Lights themselves. The rock carvings of Alta are listed on the UNESCO heritage list, and is the most impressive concentration of stone age art in Northern Europe. Finnmarksløpet is Europe's longest dog sledding race. It runs a 1,000 km through Finnmark county, and both starts and ends in Alta. The Alta scenery, such as the salmon river of Altaelva and the monumental canyon of Sautso, are best experienced by river boat, canoe, mountain bike, ATV or hiking. UIT Norway's Arctic University has 3,000 students and 300 staff at their Alta Campus. The airlines Norwegian and SAS both fly directly to Alta in 2 hours. The voyage to fascinating destinations like Karasjok, Kautokeino, Hammerfest and the North Cape starts here.
