In geological terms, the Monts de Cantal maybe be considered as an intermediate massif. But above all, they represent an outstanding sporting terrain. Cyclists discovered them late in the Tour’s history, but Eddy Merckx, Lucien Van Impe and Richard Virenque have already had the opportunity to place their names at the foot of the Plomb du Cantal or the Puy Mary, the landmarks of the chain of volcanoes.
Considered as outdated on the great scale of evolution, above all, these peaks offer exciting future challenges for sportsmen and women who are nature lovers. The resort of Le Lioran, which the Tour already visited in 1975, was called Super Lioran in those days. It is now regularly besieged by the participants of the Oxygen Challenge (which features 2 sports: trail running and mountain biking). This year it will renew ties with the champions of the Grande Boucle (Big Loop) by allowing them to spend their rest day there.
