Department of Aisne
Conseil général de l'AisneIn Aisne, anything is possible. See for yourself.
Stretching from the gates of Paris to those of Brussels, so close to the Netherlands, Germany and England, Aisne has been spared the booming urbanisation seen in Ile de France, while remaining in direct contact with the most active market in northern Europe and its 80 million inhabitants.

With its birder beginning a mere 45 minutes from the airport at Roissy, Aisne offers easy access to all three major European Axes: London - Milan, Paris - Berlin and Amsterdam - Madrid.

In addition to this exceptional geographic situation the region also enjoys equally exceptional landscapes and cultural, historical and industrial assets. Châteaux, theatres, abbeys, a Carolingian capital, factories, churches and fortified cities, and renaissance, classic, baroque, Romanesque, Flemish and Art Deco styles, white stone and red brick coexist; Aisne expresses its history through its more than 500 registered historical landmarks, waiting to be discovered in cities and along village byways, scattered across the varied landscapes of the valleys of the Aisne, the Oise and the Somme - hedges, open plains, forests, ponds and virgin spaces. The story of the Aisne is told through the works of La Fontaine, Dumas, Claudel, Racine, all children of the region where Camille Desmoulins and Condorcet are still remembered, where the canon of the battle of the Chemin des Dames still painfully resonate, where Jean-Baptiste André Godin lit the flame of social utopianism, from whence Jean Mermoz and Paul Codos took flight, and where the Vase of Clovis was shattered.

Culture, memory, sport, nature: it is hard not to find authenticity and satifying opportunities for real pleasurable getaways in the Aisne. Are you looking for fresh air or a stay in the land of fables, writers, champagne, maroilles, utopia and remembrance; far from the crowd yet so close to Paris? One can discover Aisne on foot, bicycle, in a horse-drawn carriage, a hot air balloon, a canoe or riding a donkey. One can stop at a country bed and breakfast, a camp site or just take the time to enjoy an excellent meal.
