The hour of Lure

Sporting stakes07.03.2013Stage 5- Châteauneuf-du-Pape / La Montagne de Lure

The hour of Lure has come. The peloton can no longer be lured into thinking it can avoid the moment of truth when this Paris-Nice sorts the men from the boys, the potential winners and the also ran.

The first hills in this edition already exposed many strengths and weaknesses but the other Giant of Provence, topping at 1,826 metres, will definitely award the plaudits to the men in early season form and rule out the ones not quite ready yet. Leader for the last two days, Andrew Talansky displayed unusual skills and power but also the mental strength of a true leader. He is eager to tackle the 14 kms of a climb he has not ridden yet but that he knows well from the videos of Alberto Contador victory in 2009. He really does not seem ready to lose ground on the barren flanks of this smaller version of the Ventoux. And it also seems unlikely to see his compatriot Tejay Van Garderen far from a leading role in the final ascent. Other profiles look more unpredictable. Sylvain Chavanel lost his Yellow Jersey but not that much time on the same mountain four years ago. The Frenchman repeats he is not a climber with such insistence that he probably believes exactly the opposite. Dutchman Robert Gesink looked a rather safe bet before the prologue but has since appeared below par.  As for diminutive Colombian climber Nairo Quintana, he is probably everybody's favorite, yet still has to prove himself at such a level.
