On the edge of the Ecrins National Park, Valbonnais is a pretty village which gave its name to the whole of its region. Long a stronghold of the Alleman family, one of the most powerful of the Dauphiné in the Middle Ages, it preserves architectural remains like its former feudal castle (15th century). One of the attractions of Vabonnais is its "magic square", a stone engraved with the words Rotas Opera Tenet Arepo Sator. Whether one reads from right to left, from top to bottom or from right to left, the formula is the same. It is a Latin palindrome meaning: "The sower Arépo holds the wheels of his plow with care.” Its real significance remains a mystery.
