At the foot of the Pyrenees, Ariege is a land rich of its cultural and environmental diversity but also of its economic scope.
It combines deeply rooted traditions with industrial expertise. Aeronautic sub-contracting and micro-technologies are among its main development strengths. The Ariege way of life also has international appeal. As a result 25,000 newcomers chose to live in the department in the last decade. The proximity with Toulouse, the A61 motorway and its vocation as a crossroads between the Mediterranean, the Pyrenees and the Atlantic are also undeniable assets. To try Ariege is to adopt it could be the department's slogan.
Km 19.5 : Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges
Noted for the ancient ruins of Lugdunum, a town of 10,000, and even more so for its 11th & 12th century Romano-Gothic cathedral, which is a World Heritage site. The 12th century St Just de Valcabrer basilica, built with the stones of the Roman town, is one of the finest examples of Roamnesque art in the Pyrenees.
