Gérardmer La Mauselaine

Ski resort, trail resort

Gerardmer is a charming city offering a range of crafts around wooden objects and textile, especially household linen. Tourism is a major economic booster – the lake, ski pistes, a majestic and natural environment, a rich industrial heritage are some of the assets promoted by the Tourism Office. The municipality of Gerardmer, wishing to diversify its tourist offer and to use the skiing domain outside the ski season, has turned into a trail running stronghold. The town is now officially labelled as a “trail resort”, the only one in the Vosges massif.
Entirely dedicated to running in a natural setting, the town offers plenty of opportunities to learn, train and practice whatever the age or level. Eight trail courses are now open, from 6.5 km to 43.9 km-long, with elevations ranging from 300 metres to 1,879 metres, as well as a trail stadium with different workshops and apparels making it possible to train specifically. An information office is also available.

The last Dutch victory

Dutch under-23 champion in 2002, Pieter Weening scored in 2005 his first and possibly greatest career victory to date in the only Tour de France stage to finish in Geradmer. Aged 24 at the time, the versatile Dutchman outwitted on the line such an experienced rider as Andreas Kloeden. The victory helped him be named best Dutch rider of the year in 2005. While he confirmed later by twice winning the Tour of Poland and by holding the Giro pink jersey in 2011, Pieter Weening suffered from the crisis hitting his Rabobank team. His 2005 stage win is, oddly enough, the last by a Dutch rider on the Tour. At 32, Weening remains a solid pillar of Australian team Orica Greenedge.
