Stage 2: Al Rufaa street Team Time-trial, 14 km
141 riders at the start (Modolo (BAR) non-starter). Sunny and windy
A brand new course just outside Doha welcomed the 141 riders of the 2013 Tour of Qatar for a 14 kilometre team time-trial in extremely windy conditions. Taking off last BMC was well focused on a possible stage success and on keeping the Golden Jesrey on the shoulders of Brent Bookwalter. Despite being second at the halfway mark (km 7), 11” slower than team SKY, the American squad managed an impressive comeback clocking the best time in 16’07”.
Team Sky finish second at 5” while Omega Pharma Quickstep have to settle for third spot, 10” adrift. Brent Bookwalter therefore comforts his overall leadership and now has a 6” and 10” advantage over his team mates Taylor Phinney and Adam Blythe.
Bookwalter also leads the points’ classification while Phinney remains the best young rider.
