Yesterday just after the team manager鈥檚 meeting, letour.fr spoke to Caisse d鈥橢pargne Directeur Sportif Yvon Ledanois. The head of the Spanish squad will of course be counting on his leader Alejandro Valverde but also on other very strong team members.
鈥淰alverde is in shape. Winning Paris-Camembert on the Tuesday and then finishing second of the Amstel Gold Race shows that he鈥檚 in shape. Lets say that he鈥檚 at a reasonable level due to the fact that his season is based on the Tour. He鈥檚 at 90%. He therefore lacks of those 10% that are so important, that can make the difference in a final part like it was the case at the Amstel.
It鈥檒l really depend on the race but I believe that he won鈥檛 be going for victory. The final climb seems more suited for riders like Schleck or Cunego who are more prepared than Alejandro.
We have several options in the Caisse d鈥橢pargne team. Added to Valverde, our natural leader, there are riders like Rodriguez or Luis-Leon Sanchez. Our strength is the team. We can count on Valverde but we can also count on other riders who could be leaders in any other team.鈥

Daily Belgian newspaper Sud Presse focuses on the race favourites who have expressed their ambitions for the day鈥檚 race. Impressive since his success at the Amstel Gold Race, Damiano Cunego remains fairly careful: 鈥渕y goal remains Li猫ge-Bastogne-Li猫ge鈥. The daily mainly focuses on the duel between the last two winners of the event Davide Rebellin and Alejandro Valverde. The Italian explains that his attack in the Cauberg last Sunday failed to work out. 鈥淚 attacked just to see how the others would react behind but I wasn鈥檛 pushing hard鈥. Concerning Valverde he prefers to put the attention on his team mate Joaquin Rodriguez, a strong outsider. During the 3rd stage of Tirreno-Adriatico, last March, the Spanish national champion had indeed won in a similar finish to that of the Fleche, managing an attack that forced Di Luca to drop behind in a hill portion of 22 %. Also read in Sud Press, Australian Cadel Evans seems to be more interested by Li猫ge-Bastgne-Li猫ge next Sunday while Carlos Barredo will be the leader of the Quick Step team.

La Derni猫re Heure des Sports, opens its daily sports edition on the hopes of the Belgian riders. The last local rider to indeed triumph in Huy was Mario Aerts back in 2002. Philippe Gilbert leader of the Fran莽aise des Jeux team believes the final climb 鈥渋s short but is too difficult鈥 for him. 鈥淣ormally I can鈥檛 win. To do so I have to be in a dream day and I have to anticipate. Like Rik Verbrugghe managed to win鈥. Best Belgian of the 2007 edition, Jelle Vanendert (13th) believes that 鈥渢he Fleche suits him. It鈥檚 shorter than the Amstel Gold Race or Li猫ge-Bastogne-Li猫ge and the Mur is made for me鈥. For Mario Aerts riding this edition in the Silence-Lotto team, the perspective of winning again is even more unpredictable: 鈥渋t would take a miracle鈥.
