The 104 riders still engaged in this 43rd Tour de l’Avenir knew that the day’s time trial would be demanding. But not that much. After the Col des Montets (km 12), they had to climb up to Finhaut. 5 kilometres with some 14% ramps after the red flag… Actually, every one thought that the real climbers had a very good chance to win this stage. And Duenas Nevado, leader of the race had pointed it out since he took the lead in La Bresse.

Gesink (RB3), Pardilla (VMC), Deignan (A2R), Clement (BTL) ou Pauwels (JAC), other good climbers, were also decided to change the order established from the exit of the Vosges. Each of them makes the clock crazy, using all their climbers qualities. And at the top of the Col des Montets, there is still dozen of riders in the same 30 seconds.

The downhill confirms the situation: Clement has clocked the best time with a tiny advantage on Duenas Nevado. Monfort, Stubbe and Gesink follow a few seconds behind. At the foot of the climb up to Finhaut, each rider has to use his last resources. With just one goal: not to collapse in these very hard last kilometres. And only two of them resist.

When all their rivals fail, Duenas Nevado and Clement, both struggling with their bike, spend all their energy to try and gain the little second that could make the difference. On the line, Clement has clocked an extraordinary time. Duenas Nevado knows it. And, in the last kilometre, he does all he can to fill in the gap. But he fails for four seconds.

At the overall, Duenas Nevado is still leader with an 1’08 advantage on Gesink

The winner interview

Thank the national team manager

It is an nice victory. The stage was very demanding, especially in the last kilometres. But I really wanted to thank the national team manager and show him I deserve the confidence he has in me for the upcoming World Championships. But to be honest, it was really hard.
