Media: Complete coverage of the 100th Tour de France

In terms of media coverage, the 2013 Tour de France promises to be an exceptional edition. The global coverage has grown significantly in many areas to ensure that the contest can be enjoyed by around the world while also engaging people via various forms of social media.

Television Broadcast: Nine complete stages live

It's a free spectacle for the vast roadside audience, and the Tour de France is also widely regarded as one of the most amazing broadcast experiences in the sporting world.

Over 100 networks around the world will broadcast the 2013 race in 190 countries. This translates to greater coverage of the Tour than ever before, something that has been enhanced this year thanks to several new agreements that will grow both the TV viewing audience and duration of the broadcast.

Estonia's public broadcaster ETV will show the race for the first time in 2013 while Al-Jazeera Sport takes over from Dubai Sport in the Middle-East. In Kazahkstan a new agreement with public broadcaster KAZsport will provide greater access for fans of the Tour; and a similar arrangement with public broadcaster NHK BS will enhance the live coverage that is already offered by J-Sports in Japan.

For the 100th edition of the Tour, the proposed programming was reviewed. Firstly, in terms of quantity – with nine stages being broadcast in full (adding to a total of 86 hours), instead of seven in 2012. Secondly, the signal available to all channels was consistently enriched, including the production of short stories on subjects relating to the race (history, art, interviews, etc) that will be used to support the live coverage of the race. Together it provides a greater insight into the heart of the race, the riders and the culture of the Tour. Finally, the editorial content will also enhance the live coverage to ensure the fluidity and continuity of the coverage for viewers with a range of knowledge of cycling, from experts to those fans who only occasionally follow cycle racing.


Web and social networks: building towards one million Facebook fans

There were 12 million unique visitors following the 2012 Tour via the race's official website, after a significant redesign of what has long been a particularly popular sporting site; the coverage was enhanced by a range of innovations, including integration with social media networks.

The evolution continues in 2013 and the Tour is destined to attract even more passionate followers. Now in its third year, the Tour's Facebook page has close to one million “Likes”, while the Google+ account is over 500,000 and the Twitter feed is followed by in excess of 150,000.

This year, there are also several new innovations designed to encourage spectators and fans to share their own photos on – the site of the publicity cararvan – as well as its Facebook page.

The uniqueness of the 100th edition also prompted Google to make its homepage a Doodle that will be watched by hundreds of millions of users. On the canvas, as elsewhere, the 2013 Tour will be launched on unpublished bases!
