At the centre of a triangle formed by Lyon, Saint-Etienne and Roanne, Saint-Symphorien-sur-Coise, the "Pelaude" city, was built in the heart of the Lyonnais mountains.
The 15th century Collegiate Church dominates the city while the Riverie gateway marks its limits.
In this city, whose inhabitants have always been recognized as industrious and greatly skilled, artisans reproduce the gestures of times gone by in the Maison des Métiers d’Autrefois (House of Ancient Crafts) for the delight and edification of visitors.
Today, with a population 3,500 strong, Saint-Symphorien-sur-Coise is an active and dynamic city. It is renowned as the capital of "saucisson sec" (salami), manufacturing 700 tons every week and is the headquarters of a cabinet maker’s specialising in "family furniture" sold throughout the world. Local business offers employment to 1,800 people.
Around sixty associations participate in the life of this city that was home to the well-known politician, Antoine Pinay.

Nesting between the wooded hillsides of the Margeride region, the dizzying gorges of the Truyère and the basalt plateau of Planèze stretching to the foot of the Plomb du Cantal peak, the Saint-Flour countryside overflows with magnificent heritage sites, architectural treasures and stunning scenery whose preservation and enhancement earned the area the title of Country of Art and History.
