Km 174 - Homage to Lapize

See you10.07.2014Stage 7- Épernay / Nancy

Kilometre 174 is the spot catching our attention today and riders might want to look ahead quickly and maybe catch the glimpse of a passing plane in the sky of Lorraine.

For it is here, in Flirey, that sergeant Octave Lapize was engaged in a fierce battle with a German plane on July 14, 1917. Shot at 4,500 metres high, the aircraft of the 1910 Tour de France champion tumbled down and crashed some eight kilometres from here. He was buried with military honours in a cemetery in Toul, before being transferred to his hometown of Villers-sur-Marne, where he still rests in peace. “Tatave” retains a place in the Tour history as the man who called the organisers “murderers” for forcing them to climb the Tourmalet in 1910. He also won three Paris-Roubaix in succession between 1909 and 1911.

  • Matteo Trentin puts an end to Peter Sagan's dream in Nancy

The green jersey wearer had done everything he could before with putting his Cannondale team at the front of the peloton all day. He attacked in the last climb and sprinted in a crash marred finale but had to accept another defeat.
