Risoul

300 days of sunshine per year

Risoul 1850 is a summer and winter resort located 35 km from the largest artificial lake in Europe, Serrre-Poncon. The resort lies on the outskirts of the Queyras and Les Ecrins Nature Parks. Nestled on a sunny plateau in the heart of an imposing forest of larch trees, it provides in the winter 185 km of ski tracks, the domain of the White Forest stretching from Risoul to Vars. Risoul can boast an exceptional quality of snow and 300 days of sunshine every year! Labelled “Famille Plus”, the resort is also renowned for its off-the-track facilities as it provides safe skiing areas for free riders. Outside of the ski slopes, several activities are on offer like an ice rink, snowshoeing and a luge track. Risoul also has a rich rural heritage especially thanks to the local apples, which used to be exported as far as North Africa.

The village is also sports friendly. It was twice a stage finish for the Criterium du Dauphine and hosted the finale of the 2013 edition. It also welcomed the Tour de l'Avenir in 2010. It is also the yearly meeting point for the largest gran fondo in Europe, Risoul-Queyras, the next edition of which will take place on July 27: 140 km of racing and 3,100 metres of altitude drop are on the menu.

From revelation to consecration

Risoul has so far been known for revealing young cycling talent. In 2010, on the Tour de l'Avenir, a stage and a time trial highlighted the climbing abilities of Nairo Quintana and the all-round talent of Andrew Talansky. Since then, the Colombian and the American emerged as two of the main prospects in the sport by finishing second and tenth in the last Tour de France. Risoul also staged a Dauphine stage last season. And Chris Froome had seized the reins of the GC to confirm he was the arch-favourite of a Tour he would eventually win easily. Once again, on this Tour, the man in the lead in Risoul will not be far from overall victory.

Places to see

Lake of Pre du Laus

In the heart of a larch forest, the lake lies two kilometres away from the village. Pick-nick equipment can be found on the site. It is also a haven for anglers. A path takes the hikers to a shelter between the Martinat and Penon crests. A splendid panorama unfolds then with the valley of the Durance, the Embrun region and even the Serre-Poncon lake.

Skiing domain

185 km of ski tracks! The White Forest domain stretches between Risoul and Vars and comprises 116 pistes from green to black.

Sainte Lucie de Risoul church

In the Roman-Lombard style with a lone nave dating from the late 15th century, it is a historical monument with several elements from a primitive church from the 13th century. Shells on the columns refer to the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostella.

Apple orchards

Medium sized, yellow with vermilion stripes, tasty and flavoured, the Risoul apple is again in favour because of the new interest on sustainable development. It is now mostly used for an apple juice on sale in the local stores.

Hot water springs in Plan de Phazy

The site of Plan de Phazy includes several baths to benefit from the natural hot waters springing at 27 degrees. Known since Antiquity, the water is rich in chlorine, sulfate, calcium, magnesium and potassium. It is famous for healing rheumatisms, skin, liver and kidney diseases.
