Individual time-trial - A sporting perspective

Bernard Thévenet:

« This stage is the same than the one that will settle the Tour de France standings next July. The first part is identical to the 2002 Tour de France time trial but the riders will leave the climb to Chamrousse after two kilometres to take a very large road heading to Grenoble. So it’s not a time trial designed for climbers but for all-rounders. »

Grenoble is the capital of the province of Dauphiné. It is located in the heart of the Alps, with mountains rising up all around it and boasts many outdoor and sporting activities, making it the dream destination for anyone keen on nature, thrills and adventure. You don’t need to go far to see that this city, the birthplace of Stendhal, the “creator” of the tourist guidebook, lives up to its famous reputation: “In Grenoble, there is a mountain at the end of every street.” With a dense and diverse architectural history which places Gallo-Roman edifices side by side with the innovative achievements of sustainable town-planning, the city seems to draw visitors in with its narrow streets and its squares which are brought to life all year long by the energetic student population and numerous festivals. There are plenty of cultural sites to visit, such as the Maison de la Culture MC2, or the Magasin-Centre National d’Art Contemporain. Why not add another dimension by taking the the Bastille urban cable-car and savouring a beautiful, panoramic view of the French Alps? With regard to sport, Grenoble has 130 pitches and centres used by around 2.3 million people all year round. By supporting and developing activities, clubs and initiatives, and by continually investing in new facilities, the City is ensuring that sport, an important aspect of social cohesion, provides the public with a way to socialise and become part of the community, as well as personal well-being, a way to remain healthy and the possibility to collectively strive towards a goal. Whether it’s on the training fields or accompanying participants as they take their first steps, the City aims to encourage all sporting activities – be they for beginners or for international competitors, for those played individually or as a team – and actively promotes “sport for everyone” with all its associated values.
