For almost three decades, the Province of Liège has implemented a dynamic sports policy by ensuring the complementarity of sports for amateurs and professionals.
Holder of the title of ‘Belgium’s most sporting Province’, Liège and the surrounding area organize a number of big events that promote their image while also bringing in not inconsiderable funds for the region.
Among the many events hosted by the Province of Liège each year, it welcomes the world’s top cyclists for the Ardennes Classics (the Flèche Wallone and the Liège-Bastogne-Liège). After welcoming the Tour de France on several occasions, in 2006, it was the departure town for the Giro (the Tour of Italy). In 2009, the town will welcome the Vuelta (the Tour of Spain). Liège has come full circle!
The municipality of Ans, covering an area of around 2,300 hectares, lies next to the town of Liège and stretches along the old Liège-Brussels road. Made up of the former municipalities of Ans, Alleur, Loncin and Xhendremael, it represents an ideal transition between the urban aspect of the town of Liège and the rural aspect of the countryside bordering the Northern region of France. Encircled by Awans, Grâce-Hollogne, Saint-Nicolas, Liège and Juprelle, this linear municipality offers a multitude of different facets and a great variety of landscapes to the delight of its 28,000 inhabitants.
Indeed, Ans combines residential, rural, commercial and industrial districts. From an economic standpoint, Ans is home to over 1,500 businesses and shops of varying sizes.
