High mountain stages - A sporting perspective

Thierry Gouvenou, regulator, 7 Tours de France:

"The first mountain stage and the start of the real difficulties for the peloton. The first kilometres through Ain will be a sturdy, but gradual, introduction for the riders, before they tackle the Alps and the first real mountain pass of the Tour, the Col de la Colombière (16 km at 6.7%), lying 15 kilometres from the finish line. Those who are looking for overall victory may start to reveal themselves here."

Bourg-en-Bresse

A town with more than 43,000 inhabitants, Bourg-en-Bresse enjoys a thriving economic activity. The town benefits from an ideal location situated 1h50 from Paris by TGV and 45 minutes from Lyon by car. The most important pole of activity in France for heavy goods vehicles and the 2nd industrial coach building pole in Europe, Bourg-en-Bresse includes more than 4,000 companies in its catchment area. Situated in the heart of the 3rd department of France in terms of industrial employment, the Town and the Urban Area arrived in 4th position on the 2005 list of most attractive urban areas, published by the monthly magazine L’entreprise. The economic affluence doesn’t overshadow the gentle way of life. With a theatre, a contemporary musical scene and 1,200 associations, city life is interspersed with a multitude of cultural and sporting events. The diverse possibilities give rise to vocations and Bourg-en-Bresse is the birthplace of champions: the marathon runner Alain Mimoun, the cyclist Daniel Morelon, the shooting champion Audrey Soquet and the tennis man Julien Benneteau.

At the heart of the Aravis range, ideally situated between the Mont Blanc and Geneva, Le Grand-Bornand combines the assets of a major resort and the charm of a mountain village. The municipality spreads out over two different altitudes: Le Grand-Bornand properly, at 3,300 ft, typical Savoy hamlet with the magnificent Aravi range as backdrop, notably the Pointe Percée culminating at 9,000 ft ; 6 km down the road, at 4,300 ft, lies Le Grand-Bornand Chinaillon, an old 16th century village. Unity was achieved thanks to the local people, deeply attached to this land and its traditions. Leading agricultural town in Savoy, Le Grand-Bornand is the cradle of dairy reblochon cheese. Nestled in a harmonious setting, with over 400 typical centennial chalets, Le Grand-Bornand strives to grow in a way that respects this traditional environment.
