Stage 4 crosses the northern part of the Avesnois Regional Natural Park to reach Bavay, a gallo-roman town, and Le Quesnoy, a town fortified by Vauban (17th century Marshal of France). The natural regional park is a largely agricultural area, comprising fields and hedgerows, forests and plenty of streams and rivers. With its fortified towns, gallo-roman site, mills, religious heritage and its farms, the landscape of the Avesnois area is rich and diverse, with a clear identity of its own.
