Stage city for the 6th time

Prefecture of Saône-et-Loire (71)

34,300 inhabitants (Mâconnais)

1991 was an annus mirabilis for Mâcon for two reasons. On one hand, it made its Tour de France debut with a decisive time trial victory by Miguel Induráin. On the other hand, future world champion Antoine Griezmann had been born here just a few weeks before. In the 2011 Critérium du Dauphiné, young German prodigy John Degenkolb became a member of the sprinting elite for good with a stage win on the bank of the Saône river, next to the statue of Lamartine.
