Stage city for the 18th time
Prefecture of Gard (30)
154,000 inhabitants (Nîmois)
The prefecture of Gard is one of those cities whose relationship with the Tour goes back over a hundred years, featuring in the very first edition in 1905. In 2008, Nîmes discovered the spectacular sprinting qualities of Mark Cavendish and became the fourth of the 26 French
towns where the British rider stamped his mark. Another sprinter won here six years later, just by the famous arena. Alexander Kristoff claimed his second stage victory after a thrilling finale that saw poor Jack Bauer get caught by the pack with just 20 metres to go. Other than the Tour, the Roman city has also welcomed the Grand Départ of the Vuelta in 2017 and quite a few stage finishes of the Grand Prix du Midi Libre.
