Stage 4 | Kokologo > Boromo - 136 km   Etape Suivante   Etape Suivante

In Boromo, Tarik Haraki is laughing

At the end of a superb seven rider breakaway, the team mate of the yellow jersey surprised the Belgian rider, Lionel Syne, winner of yesterday's stage, who settled for the hot points jersey. Trapped at the back for a moment, Abdelati Saadoune was the instigator of a highly efficient counter-attack launched fifteen kilometres from the finish. He conserves and reinforces his leader position (1'09'' ahead of Alexandre Lecoq). Christophe Ribot, third in the stage, confirms the great form of the Burkina Faso riders, who have accumulated the places of honour from the start (twice 2nd & twice 3rd). When will we see a stage victory ?

The start of the fourth stage is given at 9h00 to 76 riders, following the withdrawal of the Dutch rider, Remko Kramer. Breakaway attempts fail, victim to the frantic pace of the race kept up since the start (daily average : 41,9 km/h). Nothing really happens until the first hot point in Gounghin (Km 45), where the breakaway is formed in two parts : Lucien Zongo, Tarik Haraki, Daniel Aguado, Christophe Ribot and Vincent Dubot, soon joined by Lionel Syne and Tidiane Ouedraogo.

The gap widens - the yellow jersey reacts
The gap between the breakaways and the pack progressively increases : 1' at Km 55, 2'10'' at the second hot point, and 2'30'' at the third and fourth hot points, where Syne moves ahead of Haraki and Ouedraogo, hence winning the pink jersey. At the back, Abdelati Saadoune is trapped and, with impressive energy, distances the pack, with Gutierrez and Milesi close on his heels. The trio are less than a minute away from the breakaways who fight for victory in the sprint.

Lionel Syne beaten by Tarik Haraki
Over the last few kilometres, breakaway attempts increased ; that of the Moroccan Haraki, who up to this point was little in the lead, is an overwhelming success. Lionel Syne, disappointed not to have profited from his maximum speed, would have liked to win a second stage in two days. He wins the pink jersey for hot points ; as the saying goes : it’s dangerous to boil two pots at the same time…

A Burkina Faso display of good health !

The art of advertising in Africa would definitely disconcert "creative spirit" in Western advertising agencies, experienced in techniques of manipulation and forever on the lookout for new subtle and shocking ideas, capable of touching a public left indifferent by thousands of advertising messages.

A passage through Ouagadougou would shock their common sense, advertising here is so spontaneous, fresh and forceful. Slogans are short and striking and never hide what they are : a form of communication aimed at modifying the economic or social behaviour of the Burkina Faso people.

© Copyright A.S.O.In this domain, the government has elaborated a vast awareness campaign on health and medical risks, reflected on the walls of the capital via the multiplication of posters warning the population against sexually transmitted diseases and dangerous practices.

The most spectacular of these is probably the one warning against the buying of medicine in the street, generally out of date and which makes the patient's condition worse rather than better : the perfect slogan : "street pills kill !". Others encourage parents to vaccinate their young children, to always use a preservative or not to be afraid of the contraceptive pill. A great campaign of prevention aimed at the young people of Burkina Faso : the government wish them to remain "dynamic, prosperous and beautiful".

Again a slogan typical of the "country of upright men"…
