Escaldes-Engordany

Colors de Musica...

All year round, Escaldes-Engordany displays all the colours of music in the Colors de Musica festival, presenting every month a full scale of concerts for every kind of audience. Part of this programme, the Jazz in the Street weeks remains the most popular musical event in the principality. Held on the Coprince Plaza, the festival has been around in various formulas for 32 years and has seen the visits of such prominent artists as Miles Davis, Fats Domino or BB King. This summer, Jazz en la Calle takes place in July, shortly before the arrival of the Tour. In August, jazz passes the baton to world music, still under the helm of Colors de Musica. Every “night of the world” is dedicated to music from a different country.

Beware of the Pope's sons

In his time, Jean-Paul Van Poppel was known as “the pope of sprint”. Winner of nine Tour de France stages and as many in the Vuelta between 1986 and 1994, the Dutchman gave the current peloton two of` its most promising prospects in the shapes of his sons Boy and Danny. It is in a Vuelta stage starting from Escaldes-Engordany that Danny snatched his first grand Tour victory in Lerida last summer. The youngest Tour rider since 1947 at the age of 19 in 2013, he since warned: “I don't want to be talked about as Jean-Paul's son or as the youngest Tour rider. I'm Danny and I want to be talked about for my wins.” There was one this season in a stage of the Tour of Yorkshire.
In 2008, David Moncoutie also won a Tour of Spain stage starting from the Andorran spa resort in Pla-de-Beret. The Frenchman had strengthened his KOM jersey that day.

Places to see

Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley
Listed as a World Heritage site, the valley ofMadriu-Perafita-Claror is the last region in Andorra without paved roads. A land of rugged mountains, glaciers, altitude farms and small valleys, it reflects the mutations of climate and life conditions as well as the permanence of pastoralism and a strong mountaineer culture, illustrated by a system of land management unchanged since the 13th century.

Sant Miquel d'Engolasters church
It is one of the jewels of the Andorran Romanesque art, built at an unknown date before the 12th century. It is remarkable for the disproportion of the small nave and the 17-metres-high tower. The rest of the building keeps the architectural characteristics of the Andorran Romanesque style.

Escaldes-Engordany Art Centre (CAEE)
It shelters a museum dedicated to sculptor Josep Viladomat and a collection of models of Romanesque art in Andorra. It is housed in an original building from the 1930s.

Centre of interpretation of water and the Madriu valley (CIAM)
The museum emphasises, thanks to varied media and items, the importance of water in the life and economy of the region.
