Corporate social responsibility
Since it was founded, Amaury Sport Organisation has been involved in various sponsorship and philanthropy activities. It is the generosity of sport that can be found in a certain number of initiatives aiming to invest in the workings of the disciplines themselves (sponsorship of the French Federation of Cycling), in a humanitarian and social framework, (Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque, Actions Dakar, Un Techo Para Mi Pais) or in the environmental sphere (Madre De Dios, selective sorting, etc.).
French Federation of Cycling
The French Federation of Cycling and Amaury Sport Organisation have signed a memorandum of agreement that sets out the terms of their cooperation for 2011, 2012 and 2013.
In accordance with its policy in favour of young people, in particular through the organisation of events reserved for amateurs over many years, A.S.O. will continue to make a financial contribution to the efforts deployed by the FFC to encourage taking up cycling as a sport and to develop the discipline.
This agreement is made up of three parts:
The main objective involves unearthing the champions of tomorrow throughout France by reinforcing and assisting the Challenge Nationaux Juniors & Espoirs youth events as well as the inter-regional Cadet competitions, events which represent an indispensable tool for the future of French cycling.
2. The second part of this agreement concerns initiatives for developing cycling in the regions and departments, via different means:
- The purchase of specific equipment
- The organisation of training courses and competitions
- The implementation of promotional operations.
In order to do this, a fund will be set up to assist regional and departmental committees to achieve the projects they initiate.
Similarly, a second fund will be set up to assist clubs in organising events reserved for amateurs.
The FFC and A.S.O. will soon set up a selection committee in order to validate the actions to which they will commit.
Lastly, the position of development agent dedicated to sports facilities, for which A.S.O. has decided to provide financial backing, will be created at the FFC. This person's role will be to draw up a master plan of sports facilities and assist the various players in their development projects, based around the following themes:
- A census of facilities
- Structuring of national and regional projects
- Guidance and assistance for regional and departmental committees as well as clubs.
Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque
A Tour de France partner since 2003
This association enables children suffering from heart defects and living in underdeveloped countries to be operated on in France when it is impossible in their own country due to a lack of technical or financial resources.
Welcomed by volunteer foster families and operated on in ten hospitals in France (Angers, Bordeaux, Lyons, Marseilles, Nantes, Paris, Toulouse and Tours), more than 1,400 children have already been looked after by the charity since it was founded in 1996.
The partnership with Le Tour has enabled 200 children to be saved.
Since 1996, A.S.O. has been working with the association HandicapZéro to make the Tour de France accessible to all.
During each edition of the Tour de France, visually impaired enthusiasts of the big loop can enjoy the following free of charge:
- The majority of the road-book adapted by the charity into Braille and audio (on CD or downloadable) which can be consulted on-line at handicapzero.org.
- All the news from the letour.fr web site made accessible on the charity's web site handicapzero.org throughout the entire duration of Le Tour
The springtime of the Tour, Young Reporters and Cadets-Juniors: throughout the year, Le Tour gives plenty of opportunities to children and teenagers who are interested in cycling. Discovering cycling can involve an introductory course, a one-day long experience or a full immersion in the world of the Tour de France. Based on these principles, A.S.O. has developed operations entirely dedicated to young people:
- Young Reporters
- Cadets – Juniors
- Secours Populaire "Sport leaves nobody behind"
Experiencing Le Tour on the roads and in the press room, interviewing elite riders and putting together a newspaper under professional journalistic constraints: each year, a small team of budding young journalists is invited onto the Big Loop. Six young people aged from 14 to 16 years old are selected to follow the Tour de France. With press passes like real journalists and supervised by two professionals, their mission is to design, write and produce a newspaper published every two days with a circulation of 1,000 copies, giving them a unique experience.
Cadets - Juniors:
To maintain enthusiasm for cycling amongst young people, A.S.O. has continued its commitment to clubs by organising the "Cadets - Juniors" operation for the last ten years. This event has become a strong symbol for the future of cycling, offering young riders the opportunity to experience an exceptional day under the same conditions of a team participating in the Tour de France. Their goal is to imitate their elders Arnaud Tournant, Pierre Rolland and Arnaud Démare, all of whom have worn the blue jersey of the Cadets-Juniors before going on to make their marks as professionals!
Secours Populaire "Sport leaves nobody behind":
For the 6th year running, the corporate foundation of the Française des Jeux proposes, alongside charity Secours Populaire Français, in partnership with A.S.O. and FFC, activities for young people from disadvantaged areas. The sixth edition of this operation will concern 1,000 children aged 6 to 12 years old, on 12 stages chosen on Le Tour 2013. At the road-side of the Tour de France route, the children will have a countryside picnic and will watch the publicity caravan pass by, followed by the pack of riders. An introduction to BMX riding will also be proposed by coaches from the French Federation of Cycling with a removable circuit and bikes made available especially for the occasion. Finally, 300 children will be invited to take their place in the stands on the day of the finish at the Place de la Concorde in Paris.
A.S.O. is committed to integrating environmental considerations into the organisation of its races.
The priority focuses are as follows:
- Limiting CO2 emissions.
- A quality waste management policy for the spectators but also for the organisers and the riders.
- The promotion of cycling as an alternative, environmentally-friendly means of transport.
On the Tour de France, this approach is borne out through 3 action plans.
1 An action plan concerning control of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions
This action plan is based on:
- Reducing the number of "Organisation / Press / Public Relations / Guest" vehicles used in and around the race (45 race-involved vehicles eliminated in less than 5 years, with a reduction of 20% on certain families in 2012).
- Reducing the number of press motorbikes present on the race (drop from 21 to 16).
- Training drivers (of race-involved vehicles) in environmentally-friendly driving as part of their safety training (valid for car drivers and motorbike riders).
- LLimiting authorised speeds on the roads that the Tour de France uses to below the legal limits defined by the French Highway Code (80 kmph at the most).
- Looking for ways to optimise transport means:introducing less polluting replacement means of transport on certain stages (gondola lifts, public shuttle buses, organiser shuttle buses, bicycles on the Grand Start sites for the organisers).
- Raising awareness among support staff and the spectators: broadcasting of pre-race messages by the "Safety Information" cars, use of social networks for putting across environmental messages.
2 An action plan concerning optimising waste management
The action plan concerning optimising waste management is based on implementing a systematic policy of prevention and raising awareness among the different targets that are the riders, local authorities, organisers, partners and the spectators. The Tour de France incites and assists with implementation of selective sorting along the entire route. In order to do this, several players work alongside us to achieve this goal:
- ADF / L'Assemblée des Départements de France (assembly of French departments): implementation of the "Clean Roads" operation in collaboration with ADF has for many years involved the supply of waste disposal bags to the towns that welcome large amounts of spectators (refreshment zones, intermediate sprints, mountain passes, finishing lines, etc.). These waste disposal bags are sent out in cooperation with the General Councils and enable the towns to put in place high-capacity waste disposal bags for spectators all along the route of the Tour de France.
- The ARPE Midi-Pyrénées / l'Agence Régionale pour le Développement Durable (regional sustainable development agency), a partner of the Tour de France for more than ten years, raises awareness among spectators and provides expertise on managing waste in mountain ranges. The mission of the ARPE is the operational implementation of the waste disposal scheme before, during and after the event in the mountain ranges. It liaises between the various relevant waste collection and sorting services on the passes and slopes chosen in order to coordinate their actions and is present on the ground on the day of the stage to raise awareness and distribute (10-litre capacity) waste disposal bags directly to spectators and caravan camper drivers. The operation is called "C'est mon Tour, je préserve les montagnes" (It's my Tour – I'm protecting the mountains). The sites concerned in 2013 will be:
- ET 8 : Castres / Ax-3-Domaines (the Col de Pailhères pass)
- ET 9 : Saint-Girons/Bagnère-de-Bigorre (all the passes)
- ET 18 : Gap / Alpe d'Huez (the Col d'Ornon and Col de Sarenne passes)
- ET 19 : Bourg d'Oisans / Le Grand Bornand (all the passes)
- ET 20 : Annecy / Annecy – Semnoz (Mont Revard, Semnoz)
- Vacances Propres (clean holidays), is a partner of the race since the 2012 Tour de France which at national level carries out waste collection operations on beaches and holiday areas during the summer. Vacances Propres is involved in distributing waste disposal bags on all the zones of the Tour de France.
- The Les Connexions association, which performs on the ground coordination of these operators' waste management.
Le Tour de France will again this year be implementing a vast waste management plan with the stage towns under the slogan "C'est mon TOUR, je trie" (It's my Tour - I sort my waste)..
A start coordinator and a finish coordinator carry out monitoring by phone and by e-mail enabling the towns to set up suitable waste management strategies. These coordinators advise the local authorities on the best choices of facilities from April to August ("Tour de France waste management" eco-line). They are also present during the event in order to assist the local coordinators on the day of the stage. They implement a very specific set of specifications concerning storage and collection of waste for the local authorities which host the Tour de France. They manage systematic sorting operations at all the organisational zones of the Tour de France (starting zones, finish zones, Tour villages).
More than 100,000 waste disposal bags will be made available during the Tour de France 2013:
- 20,000 distributed by ADF to the General Councils for the towns visited (110 litres, all types of waste).
- 80,000 sent to the local authorities for the start and finish to set up sorting (grey 110-litre capacity bags for normal waste, yellow for recyclable waste and green for glass; see the images above).
- 20,000 distributed by the ARPE Midi-Pyrénées to the spectators present at the passes (10-litre capacity bags for the spectators, grey 50-litre capacity bags for normal waste, yellow for recyclable waste and green for glass to caravan camper drivers).
New in 2013:
- All the permanent vehicles following the whole race will receive, at the beginning of the race, a kit containing the different types of bags in order to facilitate sorting by all support staff.
- A "sorting rickshaw"' will be used in and around the finishing line in order to facilitate waste collection in a zone where the spectators await the arrival of the riders for several hours in the same place.
As such, the Tour de France, which has been implementing selective sorting for the last 4 years, provides waste disposal bags along the entire route (start, finish, route, popular zones with spectators, etc.).
Within the race, the environmental measures are as follows:
- Creation of zones for systematic collection of riders' waste (bottles, packaging) named "race collection zones". These zones are situated before and after the refreshment zones for a distance of approximately 1 kilometre, on which the cycling teams' assistants await the riders to hand out bags filled with drinks and food (fruit, energy bars, energy gels, etc.). The riders are allowed, before and after these refreshment zones, to dispose of the packaging in their possession in a defined zone which is then cleaned up by the organisers' teams. In 2013, a second waste collection zone will be set up, located 20 km from the finishing line. It should be pointed out that the riders' bottles are often gathered up by the spectators who see them as a trophy and souvenir of the riders.
- The inclusion in the event's rules of the obligation to respect the law in terms of fly-tipping of waste.
- The presence of "waste" pockets on the race's distinctive jerseys (yellow, green, polka dot and white supplied by the organisers to the leaders of the different classifications). The riders empty these pockets at the zones described above.
Beyond the implementation of these schemes, A.S.O. complies with European regulations by conducting a study, with the assistance of the BIOTOPE consultancy, on the effect of the race's passage on the Natura 2000 zones crossed (77 zones crossed and 167 bordered by the route of the Tour de France 2013).
3 Promotion of cycling
These are rides and events organised by the local authorities before the passage of the Tour de France, intended to promote cycling to the general public:
- La Fête du Tour – 15th June: the route of the Tour de France is opened to the general public throughout France on the same day.
- La Randonnée du Tour: a part of the last stage between Versailles and Paris will be open to amateurs. The € 5 registration fees of the 5,000 participants will be entirely donated to 2 chosen charities (Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque and HandicapZéro)
