Annecy - Semnoz

Regional Nature Park of Les Bauges

The Bauges massif is one of the best known for the variety of its wildlife.

It is home to 1,600 vegetal species, 150 species of birds and nine amphibians. Its flowers are also extremely varied. Diversity is the rule as the massif is made of small communities each rich of its own identity and traditions yet linked by constant exchanges through the course of time.

The rural architecture takes on specific aspects to each of these small territories. Fortified sites, religious buildings and picturesque houses are also traces of the local heritage worthy of the interest of tourists.

Le Semnoz and cycling

The green lung of Annecy, the Semnoz mountain welcomes hikers, riders, mountain bikers, paragliders and skiers all year round. So far, the only passage of the Tour on the spot was in 1998 as part of a troubled stage between Albertville and Aix-les-Bains. The ascent had been cancelled following protests after the Festina doping scandal.

Each year in September since 2005, the Grimpée cycliste du Semnoz (Semnoz Cycling Climb) gathers some 150 cyclists. The best reach the top in less than 45 minutes.

Places to see

Basilica of the Visitation

The basilica of the Visitation stands on the Cret du Maure, the first foothill of the Semnoz massif, and overlooks the whole of Annecy from which it can be seen almost from every spot for miles around. Built between 1909 and 1930 from plans by architect Alfred-Henri Recoura, it was consecrated in 1949 by cardinal Tedeschini. It stands next to the Visitation monastery founded in 1610 by St Francis de Sales and Jane Frances de Chantal. The bodies of the two saints rest at the top of two lateral naves in sarcophaguses of gilded bronze. They were installed there in 1911 followed by a huge crowd of Annecy people, who have worshipped St Francis de Sales since his death in 1622.

La grande jeanne animal park

Annecy has it own animal-park, a free spaced destined to teach parents and children about wildlife. It is set on the site of Grande Jeanne, on the road to the Semnoz, and spreads over 10,500 m2. It is home to two species of wild animals: 28 deer and 20 mouflons from Corsica.

The park was modernised between 2004 and 2006 to better protect the animals and pedagogic signs were installed to explain the main facts about the two species. Guided visits are also provided for schools.
