Château-Salins has a population of 2,750 and is located at the crossroads of the major transport routes linking Metz/Strasbourg and Nancy/Sarreguemines. A district town, Château-Salins is one of France’s smallest sub-prefectures and largest Community of Communes, in terms of number of communes (128).
Its name, just like the “Saulnois”, the natural area that surrounds it, comes from the exploitation of the salt that was formerly produced in the local salt marshes, abandoned at the beginning of the 19th century. The salt works in those days produced 9,000 tons of salt yearly. Today, the town has shifted its focus to public services and development of the local commercial sector; Senoble, specialised in the agri-food industry, is the town’s leading business company.
Château-Salins enjoys a highly active and vibrant community life. The town’s wide range of sports clubs and cultural associations allow the Castelsalinois (native inhabitants) to select an activity according to their preferences and abilities.
Educational establishments in the town extend from pre-school to secondary school, and provide after-school amenities; Château-Salins also boasts a secondary school specialised in agricultural training that is renowned throughout the East of France.
