Le Thuit-Signol is situated at the eastern tip of the Roumois plateau close to the Rouen-Elbeuf urban district.
The origin of its name can be traced back to Norman invasions in the 9th century. Thuit means cleared and cultivated land and Signol is the name of this terrain’s first landowner. In the Middle Ages, various lords, of whom Henri de Campion was the most famous, jointly owned the territory.
Today, Le Thuit-Signol, which underwent a massive population boom in the 1990s, counts close to 2,200 inhabitants. Its new town shopping centre and town hall reflect its dynamism. Headquarters of the SERPN (Water Association for the Roumois and Neubourg Plateau) that groups together some one hundred communes in the Eure region, a Water Centre was opened in Le Thuit-Signol last spring for children and schools to learn about the water cycle. These educational facilities are housed in the Bosc-Féré castle, whose magnificent environment and excellent amenities make it very popular in accommodating groups and seminars.

Compiègne was extremely proud to receive this year’s Trophy for the most sporting town, awarded by L’Equipe (sports newspaper), in the category for municipalities with a population of over 20,000, as this is a town that loves and is devoted to the practice of sport. 11,000 licence holders practice 60 different disciplines in top-quality sports facilities.
Compiègne is also proud of its historic past. Formerly inhabited by kings and then an imperial residence, the castle today houses the Second Empire and the Empress Museums and the Car and Tourism Museum. In 2008 the Internment and Deportation Memorial, which pays tribute to the forty thousand prisoners deported to Nazi concentration camps, was inaugurated in the Royallieu district.
The UTC, a university of ultra-modern technology, is renowned for training engineers in the branches of biomedical, chemical, computer and mechanical engineering. In 2008 it was listed as the top-ranked engineering school in higher education.
Compiègne, which has played host to the start of Paris-Roubaix for more than thirty years now, is this year delighted to stage the Tour de l’Avenir.
