Forty-five kilometres from Lyon and 35 km from Saint-Etienne, Saint-Symphorien-sur-Coise was built very early on at a natural crossroads of communication routes in the Lyonnais mountains.
Dominated by an imposing 15th century church, a listed heritage site, the city has managed to preserve a number of vestiges of its rich history: the Riverie Gate defending the southern ramparts, houses from the Middle Ages and the ancient tanners’ dwellings.
Local artisan talent is magnificently celebrated at the Maison des Métiers d’Autrefois (House of Ancient Crafts), a living museum where old artisans repeat the gestures of yesteryear in little reconstructed workshops for the delight and edification of visitors.
Saint-Symphorien-sur-Coise, a city recognised for the beauty of its public gardens and green spaces, also the capital of salami, is a small city ranked as one of the 93 "Most Beautiful Detours in France".
