Stage 1: 6 km team time trial, Doha Corniche
136 riders at the start, 17 teams
Perfect weather conditions: bright sunshine, slight wind

The film of the stage

© A.S.O. For the first time in its history, the Tour of Qatar took off on Doha’s Corniche with a 6km team time-trial. In perfect weather conditions, team Quickstep-Innergetic clocked the fastest time of the day in 6’33. The side led by title holder Tom Boonen wins this first stage with a 5†advantage over the Milram team of Alessandro Petacchi and 7†over Liquigas.

First on the finish line of the 8 Quickstep riders, Steven De Jongh claims the first golden jersey of this 6th edition. A jersey he will therefore be carrying on his shoulders for stage 2 tomorrow between Al Wakra and the Qatar Olympic Committee. The blue jersey for the best young rider is for Milram’s Marcel Sieberg.

Steven De Jongh: “A victory for Davide Vigano’’

© A.S.O. Stephen DE JONGH (NED) The goal for me wasn’t to be first of the team on the finish line. We really wanted Davide Vigano to lead the team and claim the first golden jersey. Davide’s father passed away a few weeks ago. Unfortunately Davide was dropped behind in the last kilometre. On behalf of all the Quickstep team, this victory is for me. It’s good to win this team time-trial. We really want to capture all the stages of this Tour of Qatar. Last year, we failed to do so, only winning 4 out of 5. This year we want to get them all, especially thanks to Tom Boonen.
