Mende
Nestled deep in the heart of the Massif Central at an altitude of 703 feet is the magnificently situated city of Mende. This former capital of the historic Gévaudan is located halfway between Montpellier and Clermont-Ferrand. This heart of Lozère – just 10 minutes away from the Tarn gorges – is a land of legends and preserved natural surroundings that is ripe for cultural, historical and gourmet discovery. Resolutely dedicated to sports, this is the only place that was twice voted "the most athletic city in France". Mende has forged a reputation for hosting national and international events (two Tour de France arrivals in 1995 and 2005) without neglecting its economic development, whose flagship facility is the POLeN (Lozerian Digital Economy Center at Mende). As the department’s veritable nerve center, Mende is the ideal vacation base from which to explore the Lozère region.
Maurs la Jolie
The community of Maurs is reaffirming the importance it attributes to cycling. After witnessing the passage of the Tour de France through the town in July 2004 and hosting the ninth stage of the Tour de l’Avenir in September 2005, on 14 and 15 March 2007, Maurs will be once again be a stage city in the Paris-Nice race. Fans both big and small will line the streets to watch this significant event. Yet another cycling event where the citizens of Maurs will come out in full force to offer up the warm welcome for which they are known!
