Esch-sur-Alzette
The expansion of Esch-sur-Alzette took place during the second half of the 19th century, after iron ore was discovered. Up to that point, it was just another Luxembourg village.
Esch-sur-Alzette became the heart of the mining basin, to which Luxembourg owed its wealth.
Three steel plants were built there between 1870 and 1914. Foreign labor came from all over Europe.
The population remains cosmopolitan to this day, with close to a hundred different nationalities living in Esch. The steel industry remains important, although services take up the slack more and more.
The future is promising, with Luxembourg’s first university to be built in Esch on industrial wasteland, in the years to come.
