A taste of America, a perfume of mimosa flowers
We had worried about the snow, the rain and the cold. The pack eventually had its Race to the sun. Seized by the freshness of the Paris area for the prologue, the riders progressively enjoyed the road south to the Promenade des Anglais where was celebrated the victory of… an American. Floyd Landis, victorious of his latest race, the Tour of California, confirmed the impression of the last couple of years: a quiet rider sure of what he wants, but most of all master of his progression.
Immediately from the start, this American touch was introduced by Bobby Julich, at the time the title holder and surprising winner of the prologue. Then, as expected, the race got a Belgian accent with powerful Tom Boonen, winning three sprint stages with his team mates of the Quick Step Innergetic squad playing a key role. Meanwhile, on the road to Saint-Etienne, Landis had found the decisive moment when taking off up the Col de la Croix-de-Chaubouret, with precious ally, Patxi Vila Errandonea. Thanks to the three minute lead gained by the two men on most of the pack, the leading duo of the final overall standings was already decided. The prospect of Landis’ victory gave Kashechkin the freedom to fly to stage success after the climb up the Tanneron or allowed Zberg and his breakaway companions to shine up the Col d’Eze. The French riders also had their share of the show with quite a few breaks, David Moncoutié only just missing out on a stage win after an attempt getting closer to Digne. And to reward his efforts, he captured the polka-dot jersey.
