Saint-Arnoult, a small local town in Yvelines (meaning “abundance of water”) lying 50 kilometres from Paris at the halfway point between Versailles and Chartres, used to be an important postal relay station.

Saint-Arnoult offers tourists the opportunity to discover several attractive dwellings, with 15th and 16th century facades and emblazoned doors. On the way to the parish church of “Saint Nicolas”, dating from the 12th, 16th and 17th centuries, you can visit the crypt dating back to the 6th century.

As you walk down towards Rémarde, you will come to the fountain dedicated to Saint Arnoult, the bishop whose destiny it was to be buried at Saint-Arnoult. He is the patron saint of weak children and walkers. Take your time to follow the river: several mills and wash houses used to lie along its banks and some of them still endure.

The Moulin de Villeneuve, the resting place of Louis Aragon and Elsa Triolet, has become a research foundation devoted to these two authors.

The Moulin Neuf, or Musée des Arts et Traditions Populaires (Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions), is well worth a visit and recounts the lives of our ancestors.

There are also other sites to discover: Le Colombier, dating back to the 15th century, the fireplace in the old tannery, the ancient ramparts, towers, doors, cellars… You can also visit the picturesque gardens, streets and parks.
